Video game addiction, formally recognized in the ICD-11 as Gaming Disorder by the World Health Organization, involves a persistent or recurrent pattern of gaming behaviour—online or offline—that results in significant impairment or distress. This includes impaired control over gaming, increasing priority given to gaming over other activities, and continuation or escalation of play despite clear negative consequences. In counselling, we assess how these criteria show up in a person’s daily life—whether it’s missed school or work, disrupted sleep, or conflict at home—and work toward building structure, insight, and a return to healthier routines.

Gambling addiction, classified in the DSM-5 as Gambling Disorder, is defined by a pattern of problematic gambling behaviour that leads to clinically significant impairment or distress. This may include increasing the amount wagered to achieve excitement, repeated unsuccessful efforts to stop, lying to conceal the extent of gambling, and risking relationships or financial stability. In our counselling sessions, we look at how these patterns have developed, what needs or emotions gambling may be tied to, and how to rebuild a sense of control. Our focus is on practical recovery—addressing both the psychological and real-world consequences of gambling.

Screen addiction involves excessive and compulsive use of digital devices—often at the expense of sleep, relationships, responsibilities, and overall well-being. It can take many forms, including constant scrolling, binge-watching, or defaulting to screens during any free moment. While not always recognized as a formal diagnosis, the impacts are real: disrupted routines, reduced attention span, and emotional dependence on constant stimulation. In counselling, we help clients understand their patterns, regain structure in their day, and create boundaries that support healthier, more intentional screen use.
